Radon is a colorless, odorless, invisible gas that is found in Colorado and can only be detected through the use of proper equipment. Radon gas can become trapped indoors after it enters buildings through cracks and other holes in the foundation.
Now Radon levels are usually higher in basements, cellars and living spaces in contact with the ground, so if you have sleeping areas in basements or ground levels, I would highly recommend a test and a mitigation system. If radon levels are high within a house and you are exposed to it for great periods of time, it can lead to lung cancer and it is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. So a radon test is highly recommended.
The good news is to test for radon is relatively cheap – about hundred and twenty five to hundred fifty dollars for an inspector to test with laboratory results, or you can buy your own test kits from DIY stores. The EPA guidance is to have levels lower than 4.0 picocuries per liter. Anything over this will require mitigation system. Depending on your home, and if there are any crawl spaces, mitigation runs on average around a thousand to fifteen hundred dollars.
